The Royal Docks were once the largest enclosed docks in the world. After deindustrialisation, the area has largely sat redundant since the 1970s. However, the area is now following Canary Wharf's footsteps to become a vibrant "waterfront city".

The Royal Albert Docks are located in Newham Borough, a very diverse region of East London. The area benefits from its connections to the city centre and the rest of Europe but also has downsides to the success of its transport network.
